Can Armodafinil Cause Serious Adverse Reactions?

Armodafinil is a novel, extended release injectable drug that has shown some effectiveness as a treatment for ADHD. It acts by increasing cerebral blood flow, which improves the ability of oxygen and nutrient delivery to brain cells.

It was initially used to treat spasticity in patients with left untreated Parkinson’s disease, where it was effective in alleviating bladder dysfunction and muscular rigidity (one of the symptoms of Parkinson’s).

Its effect on brain function has not been adequately studied. A phase II clinical trial comparing it with placebo showed beneficial results for improved attention, increased reaction time and decreased hyperactivity. A later phase compared it with methylphenidate, another common ADHD stimulant, and showed similar benefits.

One possible reason why armodafinil may result in side effects is because of how it is formulated. Methylphenidate is aripaquine, which means that it has a aromatic amino acid group. These aromatic amino acids are thought to have certain medicinal properties, including stimulants. By introducing this aromatic amino acid into the equation, drugs like Ritalin or Adderall are able to increase the dopamine levels in the brain faster, thus resulting in faster, more efficient nerve transmission.

Though this may seem like a good thing, these same drugs also have several unfavorable side effects, such as

  • nervous twitching
  • nausea, dizziness
  • headache
  • vomiting

Since the medications already carry a strong warning about possible psychiatric side effects, doctors will usually prescribe these with psychostimulant (Ritalin or Adderall) side effects.

Though Ritalin and other similar medications like Artvigil 150 are the fastest way to bring down symptoms related to ADHD, they can also lead to substance abuse, including addiction and depression. Because of this, doctors may not prescribe armodafinil unless patients have received at least one dose of psychostimulant along with the placebo.

In order for armodafinil Waklert 150 to work as intended, the doctor must also carefully adjust doses and take into consideration any potential for addiction. The FDA, which is responsible for regulating the sale of prescription and over-the-counter medicines, is currently examining the possibility of using placebo-controlled trials to investigate this new area of treatment.

Another reason why Ritalin and other psychostimulants might result in adverse events is because of how they are administered. While most people take a small amount before bedtime or on weekends, some people like to take the medication throughout the day so that their body can fully acclimate to the drug before going to bed.

If you suffer from restless leg syndrome or other symptoms that result from sleepiness while taking Ritalin, you could see how the medication could cause unpleasant side effects in the morning. The reason why the medication results in these unpleasant side effects is because the doses are too low. When the dosage is reduced, the body cannot handle the stress on its nerves and resorts to sleep just to reduce the impact of the medication.

Some people will experience more serious side effects when taking Ritalin or other sedatives like Xanax, Coropramine, or Valium. These may include:

  • severe and prolonged depression,
  • psychotic disorders,
  • psychosis,
  • mania,
  • delusions, and
  • even suicidal thoughts.

Even though most of these drugs are used for the treatment of mental illnesses, some are prescribed for the treatment of conditions like restless leg syndrome, attention deficit disorder, and insomnia. For patients who are prescribed these drugs, doctors are often forced to prescribe them in combination with other medications in order to prevent rebound effects. Ritalin and other smart drugs can be particularly dangerous if taken in combination with certain antibiotics.

A study conducted by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) found that armodafinil caused a higher risk of oral and cervical cancer in women than it did men. This carcinogenicity study, which was funded by the National Cancer Institute, focused on two groups of women who took the drug, and asked them about their sexual behavior and history.

Those who reported having sexual intercourse with multiple partners, while not having a diagnosis of a sexually transmitted disease, were at a greater risk of getting cervical cancer. Women with tumors in their cervix at the time of taking the medication had no significant elevation in the levels of estradiol.

However, when the drug was stopped, levels of estradiol began to decrease, which led to an increase in the risk of developing tumors. According to the drug’s warnings, women should avoid sex during treatment, and inform sexual partners if they are currently on the medication.

In rats, oral administration of lofexidacetam had severe toxic effects. The rats in this experiment showed severe damage to the liver cells, and died within two days after taking the drug. The findings from the animal studies, which are the only studies to this date, suggest that the risks of taking lofexidacetam are not benign. Therefore, it is suspected that the drug may have some affects on reproductive organs.

In patients, long-term use of lofexidacetam may lead to serious adverse reactions. Patients using this drug for

  • depression,
  • seizures, or
  • any other non-neuropathic chronic psychiatric symptoms,

need to be monitored regularly by a physician.

Patients who are pregnant or expect to become pregnant should avoid taking armodafinil. Pregnant women, or individuals taking medications for cardiovascular conditions or hypertension, should contact their physician immediately if they experience any side effects.

Long-term use of this medication can also cause depression and other psychiatric symptoms in patients. Long-term exposure to this drug may lead to adverse effects, including allergic reactions, asthma, dizziness, chest pain, eye irritation, rash, and nausea.
